Course overview

International trade gives organisations access to goods and services unavailable locally and enables expansion into other markets. Countries differ in their resources and production capabilities. Cross-border activity can support competitive pricing and lower consumer costs. The programme uses that setting to examine international trading principles and the strategic reasons for exporting, including the selection of products, suppliers and vendors.

Freight and customs work follows. Delegates examine transport modes, ocean freight, shipping documents and Incoterms 2020 with insurance cover, then move to rules of origin: how products' national source is classified, what technical information is needed and how to test whether goods qualify. Free Trade Agreements are considered alongside barriers to trade and the reasons some exporters do not benefit from FTA arrangements.

Export preference criteria and product considerations connect those topics to international sales transactions. The last day addresses payment between contracting parties, quotas, dumping and subsidies, anti-dumping and countervailing duties, and dispute settlement. Lectures, practical challenges, exercises and case studies accompany a course manual, drawing on trading and procurement experience across industries and countries.
