Course overview

An EPC contract places design, procurement and construction under the oversight of one entity. This arrangement provides a framework for construction and infrastructure projects, with particular advantages and challenges for owners, contractors and the other parties involved. The course examines the purpose and components of these contracts and compares lump sum, cost reimbursable and unit price arrangements.

Design is the starting point. Delegates consider criteria and specifications, consultants' responsibilities and the approval process, including how changes are handled. Procurement follows. These sessions address planning, supplier prequalification and selection, negotiation and award, together with logistics and risk mitigation, before construction management brings those decisions onto the site through scheduling, mobilisation, quality control and health, safety and environmental management.

Contract administration runs through project delivery. Delegates review responsibilities and procedures for variations, claims and disputes, before examining performance monitoring, project handover and closeout. Case studies and examples provide opportunities to apply project management concepts to practical EPC situations, including lessons learned and continuous improvement.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose, components and types of EPC contract
  2. Examine engineering requirements from design criteria through to change management
  3. Manage procurement activities including supplier selection and risk mitigation
  4. Apply construction planning, quality control and safety management techniques
  5. Describe contract administration practices for changes, claims and project closeout
  6. Apply course concepts to case studies and practical examples
  7. Develop project management skills for the delivery of EPC projects
