Course overview

Hostile cyber incidents targeting industrial networks threaten national infrastructure and human safety. Breaches like the disruption of the Ukraine power station prove that malicious actors can bypass physical boundaries and disable automated plant controllers. Securing operational technology requires defensive practices designed specifically for continuous physical operations rather than standard office networks.

Five days of instruction examine security engineering for industrial control systems. Delegates examine attack motivations, threat profiling and electronic crime forensics. They assess security standards including ISO7799 and ISA99, while analysing technological drivers such as Metcalfe's Law, Moore's Law and the mirror world concept of digital representation.

Delegates review controls for an Operational Technology Environment (OTE), evaluating user access, system integrity, restricted data flows and intrusion prevention. Final exercises guide delegates through structuring dedicated operational security centres and drafting defensible response roadmaps.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Assess security architectures and vulnerability profiles within an operational technology environment
  2. Evaluate physical and digital threat actors targeting industrial control systems
  3. Apply international security standards including ISO7799 and ISA99 across industrial operations
  4. Establish crisis management workflows and coordinated incident response procedures for plant networks
