Course overview

AI applications in utilities rely on data, algorithms and human judgement. The course introduces how machines imitate aspects of human behaviour, then examines machine learning techniques and their use in everyday business problems. Delegates consider the tools and software involved in implementing AI, including upgrading utility operations with digital twins.

Practical exercises receive most of the time. With instructor guidance, delegates use software and data to apply the techniques themselves, supported by theory and pseudocode. The work includes classification and clustering, neural networks and logical reasoning before turning to maintenance, risk detection and distribution planning.

Changes in utility business models accompany the operational applications. Sessions examine how AI can support customer relationships and greater engagement with suppliers, while also helping utilities manage increasing volumes of distributed energy resources. The final day considers alternative energy integration, including solar, wind and biomass, and improvements in energy efficiency.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Plan how to bring AI into a utility business
  2. Explain how machines imitate human judgement when they cluster and classify data
  3. Design applications built on machine learning
  4. Analyse and design AI applications
  5. Turn everyday business problems into AI solutions

Who should attend

This course suits:

  • CEOs, CTOs and CIOs in utility companies
  • Engineers
  • Data scientists, data analysts and statisticians
  • IT engineers and other technology staff
  • Marketing and research specialists
  • Junior engineers and graduates seeking an understanding of business analysis

Training methodology

  • Short theory sessions introduce each concept, then most of the time goes on exercises that delegates complete with the trainer's guidance.
  • Delegates use the software on real problems and real data, applying each technique themselves.
  • Delivery combines presentations, group syndicate work, an e-manual and interactive seminars, with group discussion of each exercise's results.
  • Each topic includes pseudocode and worked practice solutions.
