Course overview

Tour guiding involves interpreting sites and managing interaction within a group. The course examines the guide's role in tourism and the needs of different groups, with techniques for adapting spoken information and organising group dynamics in different contexts. Oral communication receives particular attention. Delegates consider how tours can be informative and engaging through storytelling and interpretation that brings sites to life.

Group care also involves logistics and financial reporting, together with professional relationships. Sessions address employers and tourism stakeholders, local communities, colleagues, bus drivers and service suppliers. Public speaking work covers body movement, space and timing in nonverbal communication, alongside voice management and ways of handling anxiety when speaking to a group.

Ethical responsibilities include respect for cultural and environmental sensitivities. Delegates review a tour-guiding code of conduct and examine strategies for visitors with special needs and demanding clients, as well as practices for responding to unexpected situations. Presentations and video analysis accompany cases, discussions and group exercises.
