Course overview

Accounts payable involves service as well as accounting. Managers need to understand how customer requests and vendor relationships affect the department, alongside handling Purchase Orders (POs), cheque requests and the supporting records needed to process payments. The programme relates these responsibilities to working capital and cash management.

Invoice handling leads into month-end accruals and the controls used to prevent errors. Delegates examine annual audits and departmental technology, then consider staff motivation, internal communication and disputes with vendors or colleagues. Microsoft Excel provides practical methods for managing and monitoring the function.

From module six onwards, delegates examine the accounts payable function as a genuine business partner. Work covers supplier payment timing, the cost of funds, and how to assess early payment discounts. The final module uses Microsoft Excel to prepare aging reports, perform reconciliations, and use pivot tables to extract information from accounts payable data.
