Course overview

Organisational design helps professionals work towards a shared objective through structures suited to strategy, environmental complexity and workforce availability and readiness. The programme treats design as a collective responsibility, with HR facilitating and guiding a systematic process. Delegates consider how different structure types affect individual and organisational performance, and analyse strategic goals, operating scope, governance, competence and span of control.

The toolkit supports implementation. Resources include reflection and brainstorming charts for analysis, design templates, working-session agendas and a facilitation guide. A practical approach follows a brief review of the history and development of design models. Leavitt, Galbraith, McKinsey and Burke-Litwin provide different perspectives on the organisational elements involved. Delegates examine who to involve, how units work together and how roles, hierarchy and operating mechanisms should be described.

Readiness for change is examined through a radar chart, including incentives, rewards, governance and cultural behaviours. Workforce planning then addresses staffing gaps at both departmental and organisational levels through static and dynamic forecasts, trend and ratio analysis, and zero manning, with work on recording and tabulating the information needed for demand analysis. Skill-building sessions revisit jobs affected by design initiatives, using the Meirc job evaluation system and factor requirements for descriptions. Salary structures, incentive schemes and learning and development connect the design with staff readiness.
