Interviews remain widely used to assess candidates alongside approaches such as psychometrics and multi-rater evaluation. Their reliability can be affected by poor preparation, unsuitable questions and judgements based on first impressions or intuition. The workshop examines mistakes untrained interviewers commonly make and why interviews influence hiring decisions, with attention to fairness, consistency and legally defensible practice.
Practice occupies most sessions. A short part of the workshop addresses interview myths; activities and exercises then develop competency-based interviewing (CBI) skills. Delegates consider when and how to use different interview types, prepare a guide and standardise questions. Venue arrangements and materials are followed by questioning, probing and note-taking, including the STAR funneling technique and questions that must be avoided. After the interview, captured data is classified and assessed against the competency guide to identify gaps and select a suitable candidate, supporting decision-making and report writing.
