Data Analysis for Internal Auditing

Intensive 5-day course · English, Arabic & European languages

Internal auditors and professionals involved in audit examine data analysis and sampling during a 5 day course with 7 modules. Delegates interpret patterns, trends and relationships, select sample methods and sizes, and identify anomalies. Statistical tools, Excel functions and visualisation support the work on audit evidence, fraud indicators, benchmarking and reporting.

Course overview

Complex processes require careful examination of audit evidence. The course addresses data analysis and smart sampling, including how to corroborate information, interpret patterns and identify relationships. Delegates examine how analysis affects sampling plans and practise designing representative samples for different audit situations, with attention to sampling and non-sampling risk.

Sampling methods have different benefits and risks. Random, stratified and systematic approaches are considered alongside interval, subjective, block, dollar unit and stop or go methods. Benchmarking includes Practice Advisory 2320 and Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) recommendations and publications, with peer and performance comparisons used to examine the effectiveness of analytical techniques.

Unusual results need interpretation. Group work uses real-time data bundles to turn raw information into knowledge, including red flags and departures from procedures or standards. Excel functions and queries accompany work on fraud indicators, sample-size adjustments and combined results, before delegates examine outliers, missing values and errors through statistical and visual methods that support reporting.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain techniques used in analysing audit data
  2. Assess how data analysis affects audit sampling
  3. Use statistical tools to analyse information, manipulate data and sample audit evidence
  4. Apply sampling methods suited to different audit scenarios
  5. Identify anomalies and deviations in results to support audit reporting
