Employees can experience unfairness, alienation, demotivation and frustration even in well-managed organisations. Channels for raising concerns and addressing them fairly and promptly at the lowest appropriate level help frame the work on employee relations. Delegates examine the strategic role of relationships between managers, unions and employee representatives, including trust, workplace culture, productivity and employee well-being when conflict occurs.
Boundaries affect relationships. Interests, rights and obligations are considered alongside motivation, engagement and coaching, while power is examined through discipline, accountability and rule enforcement. Bargained and residual rights inform discussion of policies and collective agreements. Performance management work addresses standards, the responsibilities of management and unions, absenteeism and support for improvement.
Disputes require a response. Mediation, conciliation, bargaining and negotiation are studied with grievances, settlements and arbitration. Delegates examine investigations, industrial action, management responses and rights concerning dismissal and discipline. The final sessions consider employee voice through joint consultative committees, representatives, forums, quality circles and partnerships, alongside legislation. These topics connect unionised work with other forms of employee representation.
