Course overview

Lean management has applications in demanding settings including software development, manufacturing and construction. Early implementation can present substantial difficulties for teams. Leaders need environments and systems that allow employees to take responsibility for practices, behaviours and thinking associated with improvement. Observations, practices and values from Toyota inform the workshop's examination of leadership in developing such conditions.

Capability requires development. Delegates assess the organisational context supporting lean operations and individual performance, and identify competencies for examining systems and practices. The work addresses leaders' roles in people development, learning environments and problem-solving responsibilities within strategic priorities. Lean tools are considered in relation to capable systems, operator and layout interfaces, role requirements and the distinction between normal and abnormal conditions.

Core capabilities guide selection, role readiness and education roadmaps. Performance planning connects goals and role clarification with development, including rotation and short assignments. On-the-Job Training (OJT), On-the-Job Development (OJD) and classroom learning are examined for their different roles in lean work. Individual capability assessment, problem-solving and job handling inform challenging projects and opportunities beyond existing silos, with coaching, mentoring and self-reflection supporting learners.
