Course overview

The processes for producing, refining, and distributing oil and gas are capital-intensive and rely on complex, specialised technology. Staff working in one part of the business often lack a clear picture of how the rest of the supply chain fits together, making it difficult to understand the wider industry context.

The course provides a start-to-finish look at the petroleum industry. Delegates begin by exploring petroleum geology and how new oil and gas fields are developed. The sessions then move through global energy markets, examining OPEC, the EIA, and pipeline geopolitics to understand how oil is traded and priced.

In the second half of the week, the focus shifts to downstream operations. Delegates look at refinery processes like distillation and blending, along with gas processing techniques such as amine sweetening and sulphur recovery. The final day covers management and financial structures. This gives delegates the background they need to evaluate corporate opportunities across the sector.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Identify core processes used in upstream exploration and production
  2. Evaluate the techniques used to refine downstream products
  3. Outline the structure and common challenges of the oil and gas business
  4. Apply a broad understanding of the industry to evaluate corporate opportunities
