Oil Production and Processing Facilities

Intensive 5-day course · English, Arabic & European languages

Chemical, mechanical and facility engineers use this five-day programme to trace oil and gas operations from wellhead to refinery gate. The syllabus covers exploration, surface processing, produced water management, gas sweetening and downstream refining. Delegates also study common operating problems including emulsions, sand handling, wax, asphaltenes and gas dehydration.

Course overview

Crude oil and natural gas rarely arrive at processing facilities in a clean state. Sand, water, wax and acid gases all need removing before the product meets pipeline or refinery specification. The engineering decisions made at each treatment stage affect throughput, safety and cost across the entire value chain.

The programme begins with petroleum geology, reservoir types and exploration. Delegates then examine surface processing in detail: separation, dew point control, acid gas injection and produced water management, including water injection systems. Short enough to grasp in a single session, each topic builds on the previous one to give a joined-up picture of what happens from the wellhead outward.

Gas treatment takes up two full days. Sessions cover amine gas sweetening, alkanolamine selection, physical solvent processes using Selexol, Fluor, Rectisol, Purisol, Sulfinol and HiPure, as well as batch processes such as Chemsweet and SulfaTreat, iron chelate systems including LO-CAT and SulFerox, and liquid hydrocarbon treating with Merox and Molecular Sieve. Delegates learn to troubleshoot common operating problems in amine units. The final day covers downstream refining, oil storage and transportation, petrochemical industry structure, refinery complexity, and global energy pricing and statistics.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain the origins and chemical characteristics of oil and natural gas
  2. Identify the challenges of offshore operations and horizontal drilling
  3. Outline the methods used to explore, drill, produce, treat and transport hydrocarbons
  4. Apply treatment technologies for oil, natural gas and produced water
  5. Evaluate the processes involved in crude oil refining and refinery complexity
  6. Troubleshoot gas sweetening and physical solvent units
