Course overview
Pigging provides information about pipeline condition and supports maintenance work. This course examines the devices used for cleaning and inspection, the operating conditions that affect their use and the defects that can lead to failure. Material degradation receives attention alongside other operational causes. Delegates consider preventive and corrective technologies and the risk associated with equipment failure.
Planning starts with the pipeline configuration. Sessions examine pig traps and launching or receiving operations, then address bends, valves and special fittings, including systems with several diameters. Worked examples connect these details with decisions about pig-run frequency, fluid cleanliness and site safety.
Smart pig inspection introduces data collection and analysis using non-destructive testing (NDT). Delegates examine criticality rankings and Fitness for Service (FFS) estimates of remaining life, using the results to consider maintenance and repair programmes. Later work addresses tracking equipment onshore and offshore, reporting abnormal conditions and maintaining pigs and their spare parts.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain industry-standard requirements for inspecting pipelines
- Inspect pipeline systems using NDT instrumentation
- Develop efficient pipeline maintenance programmes
- Implement recommended technologies for repairs and alterations
Who should attend
This course suits:
- Technical personnel at all levels involved in piping system operations and maintenance
- Plant professionals operating pipeline systems
- Engineers responsible for operational reliability
- Engineers and technical staff carrying out inspection and condition monitoring
- Technical support, maintenance and repair professionals
- Engineers planning new pipelines or retrofits to existing systems
Training methodology
- Formal lectures and interactive worked examples follow workshop principles.
- Team workshops use industrial cases, practical examples and video presentations to examine pipeline problems.
- Discussion gives delegates opportunities to share professional experience, and all course materials are provided.
