Course overview

Finance staff combine accounting responsibilities with the daily work of organising tasks and communicating with colleagues. This course develops those professional skills alongside an overview of management and finance. Delegates practise approaches to personal organisation and time management, then examine how to manage and structure a finance function.

This course covers the management and organisational capabilities needed in a corporate finance environment. Delegates begin with the macro picture: how the finance function supports operational departments, how the financial statements relate to each other and what effective management looks like in practice. Sessions then address personal organisation, covering delegation techniques, the characteristics of effective delegation, inbox control, clean desk disciplines and how to identify and protect peak performance time.

Five days mix individual exercises with role-playing scenarios, group presentations and Excel workshops. The programme also examines team management in depth, from setting recruitment criteria and sharpening interviewing technique to using the skills and attitude matrix and motivating staff. Subsequent sessions cover how to structure the finance department itself, setting up authorisation matrices, scheduling the monthly accounting cycle and implementing cross-training plans. The course concludes with policies and procedures, covering how to document financial rules and define staff responsibilities.
