Course overview

Business intelligence (BI) informs decisions through the analysis and presentation of data. Reporting starts with the source. Power BI provides tools for connecting to information and shaping it for analysis; delegates then build models and interactive visuals to communicate findings during five days of study.

The course opens with business intelligence concepts and the Power BI interface, then moves into Power Query for data transformation, covering ETL functions, cleaning techniques and restructuring methods. Day three addresses data modelling and DAX, the expression language delegates use to write measures and calculated columns. The final two days focus on visualisation design and the Power BI Service, where delegates publish and share their work, manage user permissions, and apply row-level security.

Exercises use sample datasets for data preparation and dashboard design. The publishing session covers sharing a report with stakeholders, alongside scheduling refreshes, governance and mobile access.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain core business intelligence concepts and data-driven decision-making
  2. Use the Power BI interface to transform data and create visualisations
  3. Import and clean data from multiple sources in preparation for analysis
  4. Build interactive dashboards and reports that communicate data clearly
  5. Apply DAX functions to develop analytical measures within Power BI
  6. Share work and collaborate using Power BI Service and Power BI Mobile
  7. Implement data security and governance controls within Power BI
