Effective maintenance planning provides the operational foundation for high plant availability and controlled engineering costs. When maintenance technicians arrive at job sites without clear task steps, verified spare parts or specialised tooling, repair durations expand and equipment downtime multiplies. Rigorous planning eliminates these administrative delays by preparing detailed work orders before technicians receive task assignments. By establishing verified task scopes, safety controls and material requisitions well ahead of time, planners ensure craft teams work efficiently and safely on production equipment.
Delegates learn to manage complex maintenance interventions and plant shutdowns using established project management methodologies. Course modules address Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) compilation, critical path identification, resource histograms and contractor coordination. Planners study forward and backward scheduling techniques to balance craft workloads against operational operating windows. By combining disciplined task sequencing with realistic duration estimates and systematic risk assessments, engineering teams can coordinate concurrent overhaul activities without incurring costly schedule overruns or compromising industrial safety protocols.
Sustainable productivity gains require continuous measurement and cross-departmental alignment between maintenance and operations. The syllabus explores labour utilisation tools, including Day in the Life Of (DILO) studies, Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) analysis and the 3Rs review process. Delegates examine structured conflict management styles and collaborative communication techniques to align maintenance execution schedules with daily production targets.
