Course overview

Material properties and selection affect the design and operation of a building. The programme connects traditional materials and technologies with modern construction methods, examining classifications, concrete and steel properties, selection factors and material life cycles. It is intended for construction, architecture and building management staff from beginner to advanced levels, with practical cases supporting application.

Building systems need integration. Delegates study heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical and plumbing services and smart technologies, with energy efficiency and sustainability considered in system design. Sustainable construction work then addresses green materials, waste management and energy-efficient building designs, including LEED certification and standards.

Structural sessions move from analysis and load-bearing systems to reinforced concrete, foundations and ground stability, with safety and compliance and practical design exercises. The final day reviews emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, prefabrication and modular building, digital twins and BIM, and future material developments. Delegates conclude with review and a final project presentation.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain the properties of construction materials
  2. Analyse the integration of building systems
  3. Apply sustainable construction methods
  4. Design efficient structures
  5. Evaluate new construction technologies
