Course overview

Capital investment in construction carries uncertainty throughout a facility's lifecycle. The course connects project delivery approaches and risk allocation with decisions about threats and opportunities, using PMI's Practice Standard for Risk Management and the ISO 31000 series. Delegates work through planning, assessment, analysis, treatment, monitoring and control, with attention to construction-specific risks and keeping a project on track as new risks emerge.

Planning sets the thresholds. Risk appetite, tolerance and attitude inform strategy and the risk management plan, while stakeholder engagement supports identification, the register and reporting. The programme also covers Lean construction, waste minimisation and other international risk frameworks.

Analysis includes qualitative and quantitative techniques and separate schedule-risk and cost-risk work. Response sessions assign responsibilities, implement response and contingency plans, obtain stakeholder feedback and assess secondary and residual risks. Performance data, audits and updates to project documents support monitoring of overall risk levels and closure.

The course includes preparation for the PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) examination. Tutorials and risk simulations accompany case exercises; group discussions review examination questions and quizzes, and the final day includes a mock examination.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Provide a structured approach to risk management planning, including strategic risks
  2. Prepare for the PMI-RMP examination
  3. Set risk thresholds through identification of tolerance and risk attitude
  4. Apply qualitative and quantitative risk analysis
  5. Plan risk responses and apply treatments
  6. Monitor and report residual, secondary and emerging risks

Who should attend

This course suits:
