Course overview

Creative writing offers ways to express ideas, emotions and imagination. The programme introduces the principles and styles used by aspiring novelists, poets and other writers, with guided exercises and feedback supporting confidence in telling stories. Day 1 follows the process from an initial idea to a finished piece and examines ways of addressing writer's block, including free writing. Character traits, motivations and arcs follow on Day 2, together with settings developed through sensory detail.

Plot gives those elements structure. Day 3 examines exposition, conflict, climax and resolution in linear, non-linear and experimental forms, with an outline of a story or scene. Descriptive work on Day 4 uses sensory details to evoke emotion, and dialogue practice considers voice, tone and subtext. The final workshop involves sharing and discussing work, giving and receiving constructive criticism and applying editing and revision techniques. Daily breaks include Q&A; writing prompts, tools and reading materials accompany a workbook with prompts, templates and resources for continued practice.
