Course overview

Forensic accounting applies analytical techniques to information that may indicate fraud. The course examines that work from its underlying concepts through to practical use, with attention to how fraud controls can reduce opportunities for wrongdoing. Delegates begin with the fraud triangle and fraudster profiles before considering governance, ethics and codes of conduct.

Schemes take different forms. Sessions address fraud involving financial statements, assets and liabilities, as well as corruption and schemes in purchasing or sales. External perpetrators are included. Delegates examine warning signs and the internal controls used in prevention, detection and response, then practise working with information in Microsoft Office.

Excel analysis includes data profiles, graphs and histograms, followed by number tests based on Benford's law. The final module examines growth, subsets and relative size, together with Same-Same-Same and Same-Same-Different tests. These methods support internal audit and senior management in testing data and identifying items for further fraud investigation.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain fraud and the purpose of forensic accounting
