Course overview

Psychology and design contribute to human-centred machine learning alongside ML and human-computer interaction (HCI). Human needs guide development. During five days of study, delegates examine usability and trust in intelligent systems, including questions of ethical responsibility and inclusion. The discussion of societal effects considers human behaviour and values.

Bias measurement receives practical attention in workshops. Delegates explore explainability and the part it plays in users' understanding of software, then work on human-in-the-loop (HITL) learning and interface prototypes using Teachable Machine. User feedback informs successive changes to a model.

Case studies and projects accompany the theoretical sessions. The group considers how human insights inform ML development and explores participatory approaches to design. Evaluation covers both usability and the effects intelligent systems have on society.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain the principles of human-centred design for AI and ML
  2. Identify and reduce algorithmic bias to improve fairness in machine learning models
  3. Integrate feedback from people during model training and subsequent refinement
  4. Design user-centric AI interfaces for transparency, trust and interpretability
  5. Use participatory design practices when developing new AI tools
  6. Evaluate intelligent platforms for usability and their effects on society
