Course overview

Intellectual property can arise across product development, marketing, procurement and everyday business operations. Organisations often struggle to establish what they own, which rights require registration and where disclosure or weak contracts can undermine protection. This course introduces the principal categories of intellectual property and explains how their different purposes affect business decisions. It connects basic legal concepts with a manageable process for identifying assets, confirming ownership and choosing suitable protection in relevant markets.

Across the five days, delegates work through the lifecycle of a fictional organisation's products and services. Day 1 establishes the scope and limits of the main rights. Day 2 examines registration, confidentiality and territorial protection, while Day 3 considers employees, contractors and commercial agreements. Day 4 addresses monitoring and proportionate responses to suspected infringement. Day 5 brings these elements together in an asset register and a prioritised management plan. Discussions consider how legal, technical and commercial teams can share responsibility, maintain useful records and recognise matters requiring specialist input.
