Course overview

Businesses expanding internationally need a clear understanding of what a Madrid registration can achieve and what remains subject to local examination. The system provides a coordinated route for seeking trademark protection in designated members under the Madrid Protocol. It does not replace national or regional trademark law. This introductory course explains the route from the basic mark to territorial protection, helping delegates decide whether Madrid fits a proposed expansion and when a direct filing route may be more suitable.

Day 1 introduces eligibility, the Office of origin and the relationship with the basic application or registration. Day 2 explores market selection, the Nice Classification and the intended scope of protection. Day 3 follows an application through WIPO's formal examination and substantive examination by designated offices. Day 4 explains refusals, the five-year dependency period and the need to monitor territorial outcomes. Day 5 introduces subsequent designations, ten-year renewals and portfolio review. Across the five days, a fictional brand expansion scenario provides a consistent basis for comparing options and explaining the respective responsibilities of the applicant, WIPO and local authorities.
