International treaties perform different functions: some establish principles and minimum standards, while others organise filing procedures across participating territories. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to missed priority opportunities, incorrect assumptions about copyright formalities or misplaced expectations of international registration. This course develops a structured way to read the main instruments, identify their subject matter and understand how they operate alongside domestic law. It also distinguishes international obligations between states from the practical rights and remedies available to businesses.
Day 1 examines the Paris Convention, including national treatment and priority periods of six months for trademarks and twelve months for patents. Day 2 considers Berne's copyright principles and the relationship between automatic protection, ownership and permitted uses. Day 3 addresses TRIPS as a WTO agreement covering minimum standards and enforcement obligations. Day 4 compares the procedural functions of the PCT, Madrid and Hague systems. Day 5 uses treaty comparison exercises to analyse cross-border scenarios. Throughout the five days, delegates work with selected provisions and build a treaty map that separates legal standards, filing routes and domestic implementation questions.
