Course overview

Construction and engineering projects rarely go perfectly. Poorly managed variations quickly turn into expensive disputes between principals and contractors. This training gives contract administrators the tools they need to evaluate claims, handle difficult conversations, and reach lasting agreements.

Delegates review the basics of contract law. They examine force majeure, breaches, and indemnification before moving on to the change management process, where they learn to identify directed, constructive, and cardinal changes. The group then writes variation orders.

Delegates spend time evaluating claims related to time and cost. They calculate delays and draft formal notices. The sessions cover conflict resolution methods like negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, giving delegates the confidence to settle issues like defective work or program extensions.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Spot and prevent the causes of contractual claims and change orders
  2. Describe the contract change process and list the types of variation
  3. Analyse claims from owners and contractors to find a response method
  4. Assess time and cost claims to determine their impact
