Course overview
Oil and gas projects face complex physical and financial risks, from environmental regulations and public scrutiny to supply chain instability. When managed poorly, these issues lead to accidents. They also cause financial loss and severe project delays.
The course steps through a complete framework for managing project risk. Using a single oil and gas case study that runs through the week, delegates practice both qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. The sessions cover identifying threats and opportunities, assessing environmental and safety impacts, and applying industry tools like MAR, LOPA, and Monte Carlo simulations.
Delegates also examine the human side of risk perception. Through the five-day programme, teams learn to adapt to changing conditions through a stage-gated process, build action plans, and track progress using Earned Value Management, giving them the tools to escalate critical issues and make project delivery more predictable.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Build a risk management process for an oil and gas project
- Define the core roles and responsibilities required to manage risk
- Apply analysis tools to evaluate project risks
- Adapt to changing risk profiles during a stage-gated project process
- Recognise how human perception and past experience influence risk decisions
- Draw lessons from past mega-projects to improve future project delivery
