Metallurgy, Corrosion & Prevention of Failures Material

Intensive 5-day course · English, Arabic & European languages

Engineers, materials specialists and inspection staff examine material selection and corrosion prevention over five days, with emphasis on oil and gas production and processing. Delegates study metallurgy, welding and industrial corrosion before reviewing non-destructive examination. Practical exercises and cases connect material properties with asset integrity, quality control and prevention of failures under demanding operating conditions.

Course overview

Equipment and infrastructure in oil and gas production can face extreme operating conditions. Material selection, metallurgical understanding and corrosion prevention affect their integrity and durability. The programme examines steel classifications, heat treatment, crystal structures and phase diagrams alongside mechanical metallurgy and destructive testing, then applies metal properties and design requirements to hydrocarbon systems and suitable or substitute materials.

Welding changes the material locally. Delegates consider weld solidification and microstructure, processes and techniques and weld overlays used in corrosion prevention. Connections between dissimilar materials and the choice of sealing materials lead into forms of corrosion and common oil and gas phenomena, with cases of corrosion failures. The final day reviews non-destructive examination techniques, NDT terminology and quality control and standards for NDT and welding inspections, followed by course feedback. Presentations, practical exercises, videos and cases support application of the concepts.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain metallurgical principles and their use in selecting materials
  2. Identify materials suited to oil and gas production and processing systems
  3. Recognise industrial corrosion phenomena and prevention strategies
  4. Explain welding metallurgy and its effects on material integrity
  5. Describe non-destructive examination techniques for assessing material integrity and quality control
