Course overview

Organisations generate substantial volumes of operational data across relational databases and spreadsheets. Extracting commercial value from these sources requires combining database querying with flexible analytical modelling. SQL provides the core mechanism to query, filter, and aggregate records held within relational management systems, while Excel delivers accessible tools for calculation, statistical evaluation, and visual charting.

This programme brings both environments together into an integrated analytical pipeline. Delegates study how to write database queries to retrieve records from enterprise databases, export structured extracts into spreadsheets, and build dynamic models that transform raw tables into clear management reports.

Hands-on exercises reinforce each stage of the analysis cycle, from relational joins and aggregation commands to spreadsheet formulas, pivot tables, and presentation dashboards. Delegates develop reproducible routines that link database queries directly to executive reporting templates.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Apply standard analytical principles and structured data governance to commercial datasets
  2. Write SQL queries to retrieve, filter, and join records from relational databases
  3. Build analytical models, PivotTables, and dynamic visual summaries in Excel
  4. Link SQL query exports directly to Excel workbooks to streamline data processing
  5. Isolate trends, variance, and operational patterns from multi-table datasets
  6. Prepare executive dashboards and visual reports to inform management decisions

Who should attend

This course suits:

  • Data analysts and business intelligence practitioners seeking to combine relational queries with spreadsheet modelling
  • Department managers and team leaders who use commercial data to evaluate team performance and guide strategy
  • Finance, marketing, and operations professionals responsible for regular reporting and quantitative analysis
  • Professionals across operational disciplines who wish to query databases directly and produce executive summaries in Excel

Training methodology

  • The tutor uses interactive presentations combined with structured group discussions and practical data exercises.
  • Delegates complete computer-based tasks writing SQL queries, cleaning data extracts, and creating Excel reporting dashboards.
  • Course delivery incorporates real-world business scenarios, peer problem-solving, and direct feedback on analytical models.
