Course overview

A brand that works in one market may face earlier rights, descriptive meanings or ownership complications in another. Registration decisions need to support launch timing, commercial priorities and the way the brand will be used by distributors or partners. This course examines trademark protection as part of an international market entry process. It combines naming and clearance principles with filing strategy, contractual control and ongoing evidence of use, recognising that requirements and outcomes differ between jurisdictions.

Day 1 assesses distinctive signs and the commercial implications of naming choices. Day 2 explores clearance planning, including local language versions and the limitations of preliminary searches. Day 3 compares national, regional and Madrid filing routes against market priorities and timing. Day 4 considers licences, distribution agreements and the control of brand use across channels. Day 5 develops a launch and monitoring plan for a fictional expansion. Throughout the five days, delegates practise coordinating marketing, legal and commercial teams, identifying dependencies before launch and selecting proportionate responses when conflicting rights or unauthorised brand use emerge.
