Course overview
Value Engineering (VE) provides structured analytical disciplines for eliminating unnecessary capital and operating expenditures across industrial asset lifecycles. Developed over 70 years ago in manufacturing and widely adopted across global infrastructure, Value Engineering focuses on fulfilling essential asset functions at the lowest total lifecycle expenditure. Rather than simply trimming component costs or conducting superficial design reviews, cross-functional teams examine alternative materials, technical methods and operating philosophies. By conducting rigorous function analysis during early project conceptualisation phases, multidisciplinary engineering teams can identify alternative fabrication materials and streamlined operational workflows that substantially lower total lifecycle costs without degrading facility safety or structural reliability. By stripping out redundant engineering specifications without compromising client objectives, organisations achieve maximum economic return across complex facilities.
Delegates explore the structured Six-Step VE Job Plan, progressing through information gathering, speculation, planning, execution, reporting and final implementation. The syllabus covers Function Analysis Systems Technique (FAST) diagramming to separate basic required functions from secondary convenience features. Engineers apply creative tools, including brainstorming, nominal group techniques and Pareto charts, to generate innovative technical alternatives that preserve functional integrity.
Life Cycle Costing (LCC) ensures capital project decisions balance upfront procurement prices against long-term staffing, energy and maintenance commitments. The curriculum demonstrates how early value interventions reduce scheduled downtime and eliminate operational bottlenecks across manufacturing units. Delegates learn to prepare persuasive Value Engineering workshop proposals that justify technical alternatives to senior corporate stakeholders.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Implement Value Engineering (VE) methodologies and job plans systematically in industrial workplaces
- Increase physical asset reliability and operational availability to meet recognised industrial benchmarks
- Reduce unscheduled plant downtime, production bottlenecks and unexpected process interruptions
- Formulate value improvement proposals capable of reducing maintenance and operating costs by 50-70%
- Apply international benchmarking standards to evaluate project design efficiency and function delivery
Target competencies
