Course overview

Process variation and operational defects erode margins while frustrating end customers. When teams rely on intuition rather than data, process adjustments often fail to solve underlying root causes. Sustainable performance requires systematic measurement and structured analysis. This course follows the international Body of Knowledge (BOK) defined by ASQ and IASSC, drawing on methods refined over more than 20 years to isolate defects and stabilise workflows.

Delegates follow the five phases of DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control. Initial sessions examine project charters, Critical to Quality (CTQ) metrics and SIPOC diagrams before introducing Minitab for data sampling, normality tests and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA). Practical exercises teach attendees to distinguish input variables (Xs) from operational outcomes (Ys).

Statistical Process Control (SPC), Qualitative Analysis (QA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and regression modelling help delegates evaluate improvements and test candidate solutions. The final phase incorporates Lean principles, focusing on waste reduction (MUDA), 5S workplace organisation and mistake-proofing through Poka Yoke.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain Six Sigma principles and their role in sustaining process improvements
  2. Construct a project charter and formulate measurable problem statements during the Define phase
  3. Plan data collection routines and analyse process capability indices using Minitab
  4. Apply graphical analysis charts, statistical tests and root-cause tools during the Analyse phase
  5. Implement solutions and build ongoing control plans across the Improve and Control phases
  6. Distinguish between Six Sigma variation reduction and Lean waste elimination
