Course overview

Bureaucratic accumulation slows operational throughput and frustrates employees across growing enterprises. Over time, well-intentioned controls turn into redundant approvals, duplicate data entries and convoluted handoffs between departments. This programme introduces practical techniques to strip away procedural waste and re-establish lean administrative routines.

Delegates examine the linkage between organisational design and procedural complexity before reviewing methods for drafting effective operational rules. Sessions introduce Lean principles, the eight forms of operational waste and the ESSA framework (Eliminate, Simplify, Standardise, Automate). Attendees practise constructing swim lane diagrams, value stream maps, SIPOC charts and turtle diagrams to expose systemic bottlenecks.

Instruction also addresses resource allocation and physical workspace logistics. Delegates learn to balance operational duties using Work Distribution Charts (WDC) and explore the productivity impact of Industry 4.0 technologies. The final day applies spaghetti diagrams and office layout charts to shorten physical transit times and improve departmental collaboration.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain organisational design principles and diagnose drivers of administrative complexity
  2. Assess the operational cost of complicated policies on employee productivity and customer satisfaction
  3. Apply flowcharts, swim lane diagrams and value stream mapping to streamline business workflows
  4. Construct and analyse Work Distribution Charts (WDC) to reallocate workloads across teams
  5. Optimise office layouts using spaghetti diagrams and workspace planning techniques to improve operational efficiency

Target competencies

  • Applying simplification
  • Process mapping
  • Implementation of Lean and waste reduction
  • Organisational design
  • Enhancing productivity
  • Simplifying layout design

Who should attend

This course suits:

  • Operations managers, department heads and process improvement specialists
  • Business analysts, administrative officers and procedure writers
