Course overview

Safe operations depend on how people communicate, coordinate and lead as well as on technical expertise and equipment. Operations Crew Resource Management addresses these human factors in complex environments, including energy control rooms and maritime navigation. Delegates examine individual and team performance, error prevention and operational resilience through the foundations and development of CRM across industries.

Pressure changes decisions. Work on situational awareness explores how to detect, maintain and recover it, and how stress, workload and fatigue affect judgement. Communication sessions consider hierarchy and culture, closed-loop exchanges, assertiveness and conflict resolution. Team leadership is examined in relation to coordination, resilience and the development of teams able to recognise and manage errors.

Threat and Error Management (TEM) informs work on predicting risks, reporting mistakes and responding before problems escalate. Industry cases, guided discussions and realistic simulations provide opportunities to practise leadership, decisions and error management. The programme also includes group workshops, role-play, scenario exercises and learning materials for workplace use. Integration work examines daily operations, emergency and abnormal situations, and the inclusion of CRM in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), followed by review, presentations and assessment.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain Crew Resource Management principles, their development and relevance across industries
  2. Identify human factors contributing to operational errors, accidents and breakdowns
  3. Apply communication and leadership approaches to improve crew interaction and coordination
  4. Strengthen situational awareness and decisions in complex, high-risk operations
  5. Recognise, report and manage human errors before they escalate
  6. Develop resilience and adaptability when managing operational stress, workload and fatigue
  7. Apply OCRM principles in simulations, role-play and team exercises
