The programme examines established thinking and planning tools to understand the factors behind long-term strategic performance. Managers and company personnel analyse internal and external conditions, plan future moves around industry characteristics and consider the competencies, capabilities and competitive positions an organisation can build.
Different frameworks reveal different issues. Business case studies provide applications for situation analysis, Porter's 5 forces, SWOT and PEDESTL. The strategy canvas is used to examine innovation and customer value, while competitive choices include low cost, differentiation and market niches. Organisational culture is considered in relation to effective strategy execution, alongside capabilities that rivals cannot easily imitate.

Delegates study futures research, weak signals, black swans, wild cards and the Delphi method, together with uncertainty axes, policy stress-testing and backcasting.
